10k Steps and Counting: The Random Journey of a Church Fitness Convert

Holy Fit

Alright, buckle up for a tale of adventure and self-discovery at the Ambassador Seventh Day Adventist Church! Imagine a church, a fitness ministry, and me, caught in the middle of it all. When I first heard about this fitness ministry, I gotta admit, I was skeptical. I mean, come on, a church getting into fitness? I thought it might be some ploy to get Grandma off the couch. But then, lo and behold, my mom decides she’s joining. And let me tell you, once Mom’s on board, there’s no turning back.

Suddenly, she’s strutting around with her fanny pack like it’s the latest fashion trend, phone snug inside, recording every step like it’s a new world record. Next thing I know, she’s eyeing an Apple Watch, asking me to be her tech guru to hit that magical 10k step mark every day. And you know what? It was that 10k steps goal that really got me thinking. I mean, how hard could it be, right?

Well, let me tell you, reality slapped me harder than a wet noodle at a food fight. One minute, I’m scoffing at the idea, the next, I’m chasing after my sister, who’s parading the neighborhood with a baby in a stroller like she’s training for a marathon. I mean, talk about a sight! But she’s not alone in this madness; turns out, she’s been bitten by the step-count bug too.

So, there I am, trying to play it cool, when she hits me with the ultimate challenge: “Check your phone. Bet you’re not even hitting 5k steps a day without even trying.” Challenge accepted! And guess what? She was right! Cue the shock and awe, my friends. I’m thinking, surely that sprint through Chicago O’Hare Airport yesterday should’ve covered me for at least 5,000 steps, right? Wrong-o! Turns out, I barely cracked 3k.

And just like that, in a moment of sheer disbelief and a sprinkle of humiliation, I made the grand decision to hop aboard the fitness ministry train. Next stop: Fitville, population: us!

Ah, strap yourselves in for the next chapter in my fitness escapades! So, last week marked the kickoff of the fitness ministry shenanigans, and let me tell you, it was a whirlwind of step-counting madness. Full disclosure: I only hit my step goal once. But hey, in my defense, I started fashionably late in the week.

I Entered the “Step Up” app, my new digital sidekick, and the gateway to joining our church group. Now, brace yourselves for this revelation: there are folks, like the legendary Sister Karen, who were clocking a jaw-dropping 13k steps before the clock even struck 2:00 PM! I mean, seriously, what kind of sorcery is that?

So, naturally, the competitive beast within me stirred awake. I made a solemn vow to myself: 10k steps every single day this week. And let me tell you, friends, it’s been a journey. The struggle is real, but so is the determination!

What keeps me going, you ask? Well, besides the thrill of seeing everyone’s progress on the app, there’s this little feature called “nudges” and “taunts.” Picture this: random notifications popping up, either cheering you on to get those steps in or, in my case, a cheeky taunt from none other than my sister, boasting about her step superiority. Classic sibling rivalry, am I right?

But hey, it’s not all blood, sweat, and sibling banter. Nope, there are some serious perks to hitting that 10k-step milestone every day. Let me break it down for you:

  1. Improved Cardiovascular Health: Imagine your heart doing a happy dance with every step you take. It’s like a little love letter to your ticker, keeping it strong and healthy. Bible Verse: “Beloved, I pray that all may go well with you and that you may be in good health, as it goes well with your soul.” – 3 John 1:2
  2. Boosted Mood and Mental Clarity: Say hello to your brain’s new best friend. Walking pumps oxygen to your brain, leaving you feeling all sorts of zen and focused. Bible Verse: “A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.” – Proverbs 17:22
  3. Weight Management: Step by step, inch by inch, you’re inching closer to your fitness goals. Walking torches those pesky calories and keeps your metabolism revved up. Bible Verse: “Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own.” – 1 Corinthians 6:19
  4. Better Sleep: Ah, the sweet lullaby of a well-earned slumber. Walking helps regulate your sleep patterns, ensuring you drift off into dreamland like a boss. Bible Verse: “In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, Lord, make me dwell in safety.” – Psalm 4:8

So, there you have it, folks! Walking not only gets you bragging rights but also unlocks a treasure trove of health benefits. It’s like winning the fitness jackpot every single day. Let’s lace up those sneakers and hit the pavement, shall we?

A special thank you to Sister Latoya Spence for leading us in this fitness ministry and allowing me to see the fingerprints of God even in the steps we take! You are truly a blessing!

“Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.”

– Corinthians 6:19-20 (New International Version)
